Have you ever felt that your rights have been violated, that you feel the urge to fight back and lash out hurtful words?
God calls us to love even our enemies. Even though it's really hard, love should always reflect from our actions and words. When we are faced with confrontations and conflicts, always keep calm and talk it out peacefully. Speaking with rage and anger would do nothing but hurt and damage both parties. Always think before you speak. Words are very powerful so use them very carefully. The wounds that come from hurtful words leave scars that may last a lifetime.
For some reason, many people today think it is macho or liberating to use vulgar humor, dirty jokes, and foul language, but this kind of talk is abhored by God.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
We also should not take part in gossip, spread of rumors and even speak of slander because it is the work of the devil.
But how do we determine what is gossip?
As James 1:5 tells us "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him."
Remember that hurtful words come from broken people. Understand that they are the ones who are hurting and needs love. Jesus said "But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person." (Matthew 15:18)
Proverbs 12:6 ESV
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the mouth of the upright delivers them.
Here's what God instead wants you to do, the next time you are in conflict with someone. Pray for him/her and also speak blessing to that person. Let me tell you, your anger and pride will die down as you do this. At the end of it, you will have a peace of mind.
Matthew 5:44 ESV
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
It will surely be difficult due to our sinful nature. However, we are called to be selfless; to deny ourselves and follow Jesus.
Luke 9:23 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
