"What's in it for me?"
This is a question we always ask ourselves before we decide if we should help or be involved in a certain situation.
Being self-centered is the problem and it is in the very nature of humans. I remember seeing children who fight with each other because of toy ownership where one child says "This is mine!" and another says, "No! This is mine." I was always thankful that my mother brought me up not wanting material things even as a child.
As I grew up, I have seen people wanting to prove themselves better. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be successful but keep in mind of the motive behind. Are you doing it for yourself?
It has always been a heart issue. Do everything for God and not for men (Colossians 3:23); we need to ask ourselves in everything we do if it will glorify Him. Those who do not know God shall be punished (2 Thess. 1:8,9).
Most of the time, we are not willing to go out of our comfort zones and take risks even if it is for ourselves. How much more if we do it for others?
This should not be the case. God calls us to set ourselves aside and consider others more significant.
Philippians 2:3-4 ESV Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
